Important Notice for Non-Renewed Physicians

From the Pennsylvania Insurance Department (10/17/02):

Important Notice to Physicians Concerning Medical Malpractice Insurance Policies

Pennsylvania law (40 P.S. §3403, Notice Requirements for Midterm Cancellations and Non-Renewals) requires that your insurance company provide you with at least 60 days advance notice of non-renewal prior to the termination date of your policy and inform you of your right to obtain loss information if your policy will not be renewed. If you have received a notice of non-renewal and were not provided with 60 days advance notice or not informed of your right to request loss information, fax a copy of your non-renewal notice to the Pennsylvania Insurance Department's Bureau of Consumer Services at (717) 787-8585. The Bureau of Consumer Services is available to discuss any specific questions. They can be reached at (717) 787-2317 or www.insurance.state.pa.us.

Advice for replacing your coverage:

If you were provided with 60 days advance notice of the termination of your policy and informed of your right to obtain loss information, you should shop early and seek the assistance of your agent or broker in finding insurance coverage that is right for you. If you are unable to find coverage through your agent or broker, COVERAGE IS AVAILABLE through the Joint Underwriting Association (JUA). They can be reached at (610) 828-8890 or www.pajua.com.
