A certified registered nurse midwife is defined by Pennsylvania law as a health-care provider, and is required to maintain coverage in Pennsylvania and participate in the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error (Mcare)
Fund.

What limits of insurance are required for midwives?
For policies issued in 2007, Pennsylvania law requires certified registered nurse midwives to have coverage limits of $1 million per
occurrence/$3 million annual aggregate:
- For certified registered nurse midwives who practice 50%
or more in Pennsylvania, PMSLIC provides basic limits of $500,000 per
occurrence/$1.5 million annual aggregate; the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error (Mcare) Fund provides excess limits of $500,000 per
occurrence/$1.5 million annual aggregate.
- For certified registered nurse midwives who practice less
than 50% in Pennsylvania, PMSLIC provides basic limits of $500,000 per
occurrence/$1.5 million annual aggregate; the additional required limits of $500,000 per
occurrence/$1.5 million annual aggregate can be obtained as excess coverage with PMSLIC or through elective participation in the Medical Care Availability and Reduction of Error (Mcare) Fund.
What limits of insurance are required for Certified
Registered Nurse Practitioners (CRNPs)
and Physician Assistants (pas)?
CRNPs and PAs are required to carry a minimum limit of $1
million per occurrence/$3 million annual aggregate, but
may not participate in the Mcare Fund.
What limits of insurance are
required for optometrists?
Optometrists are required to carry insurance, but may
not participate in the Mcare Fund.
- Optometrists are required to carry a minimum
limit of $200,000 per occurrence/$600,000 annual
aggregate, unless they have a Glaucoma License;
- Optometrists with a Glaucoma License are
required to carry a minimum limit of $1 million per
occurrence/$1 million annual aggregate.
