PMSLIC was formed by the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 1976. Commercial insurers were pulling out of the market, and the Society wanted to establish a company that would be a stable source of professional liability insurance for the medical profession on a long-term basis.

NORCAL is a physician-owned and physician-operated company that was formed to respond to the needs of California physicians and, along with PMSLIC, is dedicated to providing quality and service to policyholders and advocacy for the medical community.
