88% of Formal Claims
Without Indemnity Payments
The NORCAL Group — PMSLIC Insurance Company and NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company —
closed 88% of formal (reserved) claims in 2010 without indemnity payments.* Of these claims,
26% were closed with no payments whatsoever, while 62% were closed with expenses only —
no indemnity payment. Only 12% were closed with indemnity payments. At NORCAL Mutual and PMSLIC,
we defend our policyholders with integrity and total commitment.
*A formal or reserved claim is a claim for which money has been reserved and set aside to cover
possible expenses and indemnity payments. The amount reserved and set aside is based on an analysis
of the claim.
**The NORCAL Group spent $68 million defending policyholders and paid $90 million
in indemnity payments in 2010.
